D-Day…June 6th, 1944
Imagine you are 18 and have been on a boat for over a month. You are part of 1st Infantry Division and 29th Infantry Division landing team at Omaha Beach. The bell rings and you hear your Sarge’s voice telling you: “Gear up, 15 min out!”
You stand up; wipe the sleep from your eye right before your brain dumps enough adrenalin for 10 men into you.
All of a sudden, it’s here…you grab your pack, load your rifle and put on flotation.
“Climb in the landing craft!-10 min out!” you hear them say up and down the line. Everyone starts to shuffle onto the LC’s line by line. You check the person in front of you, and their gear, the man behind you does the same. You hear men vomit. You think and pray to every God you know of that you and your friends live through this.
“Boats Away!” calls the BM1 on radio and your small LC drifts into the ocean…….
Please take a moment today to reflect and remember all of the Allied forces on the 69th anniversary of the D-Day invasions. Without these great men and women and their sacrifices, civilization would not exist in the way which we know today.
The 69th Anniversary of D-Day: Honor, Courage, Commitment.
