The rest of the story: Smoky Mountains National Park camping trip
So we planned the trip literally in one day- trying to hit dates the most of us could go on. Its been a busy year and lots of friends have new babies, new responsibilities, new jobs etc. Normally we roll 5-6 deep on our trips, but our friends John, Jake and Jason (Mike, you don’t count…yet 🙂 were not able to make it. So it was just the Dratester, Mike C, Theis and myself.
We rolled out early Friday after monitoring the weather all week. By Tuesday, was at an 80% chance of rain for almost 5 days, straight- but at least the temperature was supposed to be in the 70’s. We debated on pushing the trip out to another weekend and taking the chance on the temperature, or continuing the trip and making the deciding when we get there. Not afraid of the cold- i have found that wet and semi-warm temperatures can lead to a miserable trip-one that takes place mostly in a tent-versus the outdoors. However waiting till its colder- snow camping, when done properly, allows you to layer your clothing to avoid overheating and the snow can actually insulate your tent, as long as its not blowing hard. Needless to say, the natives were worried about a very damp trip which led to many discussions of “where else can we go?”
We decided to go obviously.
So perhaps a winter trip is still in the cards, either this year or earlier next.
Just downloaded some images from the phone so as promised i am uploading them.
